Which flanges are used in the petrochemical industry?

In many applications, engineers need to find a way to close a chamber or cylinder in a very safe manner, usually because the substance inside must be different in composition or pressure from the substance outside.

Flanges are a component of many engineering and piping projects.

They achieve this by securing two pieces of metal or other material together with a ring of bolts on a lip. This "lip" is a flange.

Piping Engineering

You can join two sections of metal pipe together by welding or brazing, but pipes joined in this way are prone to bursting under high pressure. A safer way to connect two sections of pipe is to use flanged ends, which can be bolted together. This way, even if gas or liquid builds up to high pressure inside the pipe, it usually won't be a problem.

Mechanical Engineering

To connect two parts of a large enclosed area, it is usually best to use flanges and bolts. An example is the connection between the engine and transmission in a car. In this case, both the engine and transmission contain many moving parts that are easily damaged if dust or other small objects get inside. By connecting the housings of the engine and transmission in this way, engineers can protect the inner workings of both.

Electronics

Flanges have specific uses in cameras and other electronic devices. While the flanges for such items don't usually have to withstand high pressure, they must maintain a tight seal so as to block harmful particles. These flanges typically connect two different materials, such as the glass of a lens and the rest of the camera body
